“I want to spend those last shows with the most generous, encouraging, welcoming, passionate, excitable fans' — so we came to see you in Toronto.” Taylor Swift, one of the most influential pop-artists of this century, had one of the Highest Grossing Tours of all time over the past two years. As the ERAS tour is coming to an end in Canada, it is crucial for Canadians to understand the impact this tour had on our country’s economy.
In Toronto, Swift performed six sold-out shows with Gracie Abrams in the Rogers Centre on Nov 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23. While everyone has heard of the extremely high prices fans have paid to visit their favourite artists, not many are aware that the payments from the concert alone has given the government over 60 Million Dollars in Tax Revenue. It is also estimated that over 500,000 travelled to Toronto from outside of the city solely for the event. The extreme amount of individuals entering the city for the concert has given the local economy a boost. According to CBC news, the Taylor Swift Concert has $282 Million in revenue. While we don’t have the exact numbers yet, it is reasonable to believe that this is an accurate estimate. Not only does the sale of tickets in the concert create revenue for the city, people attending may also purchase food from local vendors, tour the city, stay in hotels, use public transit and shop for their concert outfits.
We can also take a look at the impact her concert created around the world. In the United States, Swift’s concert in Los Angeles increased the government GDP by 320 Million Dollars. Over 3,300 jobs were created as a result of the tour, over 9 Million was charged in taxes for hotel rooms and sleeping accommodations and it was estimated that 160 Million in revenue was generated for local businesses as a result of the concert. Her US tour is estimated to have generated over 5 Billion dollars in revenue. It is estimated that the average American Swiftie spent around 1,300 USD per show inclusive of travel, food, merchandise and overnight accommodations.
Not only has the concert itself generated this massive amount of revenue, her documentary about the ERAS tour grossed over 261.6 million USD globally which makes it the highest grossing concert film of all time. It beat the previous record set by Micheal Jackson’s “This is It” film released in 2008. She will also be releasing an anthology of her concert pictures in a 256 paged book which will contain over 500 photos of her from the ERAS tour.
Taylor Swift has been one of the most prominent artists of this decade. As her tour comes to an end, we are able to highlight the major economic impact that artists such as Swift are able to create. Her concert was extremely memorable for not just everyone who attended but for the city she performed in as well. Her tour is one to remember for many eras.
